Makeup on Vancouver Model Char

I’ve had the chance to work with Char, the 6ft tall beauty on a couple Vancouver photoshoots now, and photographer David Dolsen on numerous occasions and the outcome has always been fantastic! Char has what it takes to make it big in this world, especially with her height and “go-getter” attitude.

Here is Char… (She was nice enough to send me a before pic of herself to submit for the popular “before  and after” shots!) I used all MAC makeup products to create her flawless skin, smokey eyes and pale lips.

Vancouver Fashion Week – Makeup behind the scenes

This past weekend I was one of the makeup artists for Vancouver Fashion week. It was so hot and crowded backstage with limited space for us to work around, and minimal stools for our models… The room was filled with photographers, makeup artists, hair stylists, designers, assistants, male and female models and event coordinators.

Here are some behind the scenes shots of myself prepping the models for the runway shows of designers Retarded Velvet and Drew Williams. (The Hellcat Beauty team were there with us for the styling of the Retarded Velvet runway show.)

Mika Does MEN’S Makeup you ask?

Yes. Yes, she does. From anything from runway to headshots, men also need a little makeup. Sometimes it’s just for fun, to make a statement, to be eccentric, even out the skin tone or to just cover up a blemish… Men need makeup. Actors, Realtors, Models, Drag Queens… I do it all.

Below: myself and designer Drew Williams looking at the makeup I just applied on male model backstage during Vancouver Fashion Week, taken by photographer Wayne Mah. The look was an undead zombified look with pale faces and dark circles around the eyes with a red tinge under and on top of the eyes. It was so much fun!

Start by prepping your entire eyelid with “Bare Study” Paint Pot from MAC… Then apply a bronze and gold eyeshadow to your lash line with a dense crease brush. With “Blacktrax” Fluidline Paint Pot, draw circles, half circles, dots and squiggly cirlces and leave room to dot the inside with a brown eyeshadow. (I used “Espresso” eyeshadow). Line the bottom rim of your eyes with the same brown eyeshadow and define your eyebrows as well. Add some blush and some lippy and you’re ready to roar.

Makeup tips for Women aged 50 – 60/Mature Skin

Makeup for women between the ages of 50 and 60 should be subtle and light. Go easy on the Makeup as much as you can with these simple steps and you will be the Fabulous Babe you are at any age!

Mika Does Makeup’s 10 Simple Makeup Tips for Women aged 50-60 :

1. SKIN: Take care of your it!! Remember to exfoliate regularly, moisturize day/night, and use an eye cream.

2. FOUNDATION: Apply a tinted moisturizer or a moisture rich foundation and mix it with half of your moisturizer to create a more hydrated, and natural look.

3. BLUSH: Choose a cream blush as it is more hydrating and is easy to blend. Apply it to the apples of your cheeks and blend well so it gives you a natural glow. If you must use a powder blush, choose a light rosy shade or one that suits you best and blend well.

4. EYESHADOWS: Stay away from bright, vibrant, contrasting colours and tones as they tend to age you. Best choices for eyeshadows would be neutral tones and shades such as beiges, browns, creams, grays, taupes.

5. USE LESS OF: pearl, sparkly or shimmery products, since they intensify the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. A little shimmer won’t hurt, but piling on sparkly eyeshadows and shimmery powders will be overdoing it. NO USE FOR POWDER: Stay away from the powder as it tends to look cakey and dry.

6. OPEN UP YOUR EYES: Curl your eyelashes and apply a coat or 2 of mascara on your top lashes, and none on the bottom lashes.

7. EYELINER: Eyeliner should be thinly lined or dotted on the top lash line only and can be smudged out… You want to only add liner to the top lash line to keep the eyes looking big and opened. If you want to try something other than black, you can use shades like bronze, charcoal or dark brown, & colours like sapphire blue or deep purple.

8. HIGHLIGHT AND SHADE: Use a little bit of highlighting colour just underneath your brow bone to lift and brighten the eye. Use the same highlighting colour just on top of your cheekbone to make it more prominent. Shade and contour your neck or chin (2 or 3 shades darker than your foundation colour) to create a shadow. Do this by applying it just under your jawline and blending well.

9. EYEBROWS ARE IMPORTANT: Don’t forget to accentate your lovely brows, and DO NOT OVER TWEEZE. Thinner eyebrows make you look older. Shape them to suit your eye shape and darken them up with a dark powder (brown) with a flat brush. This will complete your look.

10. LIPS: Choose a moisturizing light brown, pink, or coral lipstick/coloured lipgloss. If you must use a lipliner (best not to use a lipliner since they create the look of wrinkles around your lips) then use a light neutral colour.

Remember the phrase: “Less is More” and listen to it!
