Meet Maggie Resztak -

Maggie is a personal trainer at Steve Nash Sports Club in Richmond and just completed her first fitness competition at the Sandra Wickham Fall Classic. To her excitement, she placed 3rd in her division (5’8+). I suppose her hard core 12 week training program with Adam Mulford and Brenda Whitehead (both trainers at Steve Nash Sports Club) really paid off!

After her win at the Sandra Wickham Fall Classic, Maggie decided to organize a photoshoot with my team while her body was still in top form. She brought a couple changes of clothes to the photoshoot from typical work-out gear, to casual jeans, and of course, her winning bikini made by The Suit Lady.

Maggie’s makeup was kept natural for the headshots, then brought to a more dramatic makeup for the bikini shots. She was a few shades darker than she normally is so I made sure to mix up the right shades to match, while Jewlee styled her hair and added Bellami clip-in hair extensions for some extra volume.

Maggie will be training for her next competition in June at the Provincials. Good luck to her! It’s amazing what the body can do with some strict training and dieting.

Boudoir hair and makeup for J’attire Lingerie

I was contacted by a J’attire Lingerie representative to do the makeup and hair for a boudoir photoshoot of theirs in New Westminster, British Columbia.  Of course I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to work with J’attire Lingerie and quickly accepted the offer. I then asked a fellow Studio hair artist, Leah, to join me on this job. There were two photographers on this shoot – Herman Kwong & Phyllis Siu, and one of their trademark models, Kristen, who was ready to be done up in the hair and makeup chair.

After looking at the gorgeous model, I decided to focus on a bright red lip and didn’t want to overdue it with a dark smokey eye… so I opted for a bright and wide open eye complete with full false strip eyelashes and winged eye liner for a soft and sultry bedroom look… Kristen’s eyebrows were lightly filled in with an eyebrow pencil and eyebrow powder to set. Her skin was of course left fabulously flawless for the cameras with a custom foundation match applied with a foundation brush and the pink beauty blender sponge. Kristen’s hair was then sexed up with some big fat curls using a thick curling iron with a lot of teasing and hairspray. Once we finished the makeup and hairstyling, the lingerie model got undressed and into her J’attire lingerie, then stepped in front of the cameras for the beginning of a fantastically fun photoshoot.

You can check out some of their gorgeous lingerie here - http://www.j-attire.com/.

Megan and Jamie’s Vancouver wedding

Megan on her wedding day

Megan on her wedding day

Meet our beautiful bride Megan.

I first had the pleasure of speaking with Megan when she contacted me at The Studio by MikaDoesMakeup, asking if I was available to do her bridal makeup for her upcoming wedding. I was delighted to take on another bride and even more delighted because she was such an uplifting spirit who was so easy to talk to. She didn’t need a bridal trial so we met on the morning of her actual wedding, as she was having a low key, down-to-earth wedding at a private residence in Vancouver. When we started talking, I learned that Megan’s sister had gone to school with my fiance Jay, and is also a Vancouver realtor just like Jay… We also found out we were both in the same stage of early pregnancy!

For Megan’s makeup, she wanted something beautiful yet natural, so we stuck with a light smokey eye that made her blue eyes “pop”, flawless foundation for her glowing skin and a bit of rouge for her cheeks. We added some natural looking individual cluster eyelashes in medium and short length and finished off her eyes with a couple coats of my favourite – Geisha Ink mascara on the top and bottom lashes. Her lips were kept pretty in a neutral pink and I saved a small container with the same lip colour for her to touch up with later in the day.

Megan looked incredibly beautiful when she walked in the salon and drop dead gorgeous when she walked out. Check out some of her pictures I snatched from her perfect wedding day (with photo-props to Simply Rose Photography).

A double Congratulations to Megan and her new husband Jamie!

Beauty Do’s a week before your wedding day

Angela and her bridesmaids - Wedding by The Studio by MikaDoesMakeup

Your wedding is just a week away – what to do? Here’s a quick Wedding Day Countdown for beauty do’s and dont’s.

Getting prepared for your wedding can be stressful, but it’s vital to have a beauty regime days before so you are feeling your best and looking better than ever! It takes time to prep, from mind, body and skin so be sure to save some time for this very important part.

7 days before your wedding – amp up your work-out routine. Go harder at the gym, go the extra mile, take the stairs, do a workout video… for at least an hour a day.

Avoid salty foods, caffeine and alcohol as this retains water and can cause major bloating, not a good look for a bride!

6 days before your wedding - take care of your skin. Get a facial around 6 days before your wedding to get a healthy, vibrant complexion. If you have sensitive skin, be wary of extractions as this may cause irritation. The Studio by MikaDoesMakeup offers a Biodynamic Facial – which is the purest facial you can get, suitable for even the most sensitive skin.

Also, make sure to pile on the SPF so you don’t get an unattractive burn or unflattering tanlines.

5 days before your wedding – start a gentle daily exfoliation regimen. A favourite product of ours is the Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant with Lactic Acid, which is gentle enough to use daily. Exfoliating is important for your makeup to go on smoothly and to look the best in your wedding pictures, as it helps to slough off dead skin and clear blemishes.

Condition your hair with a good hair mask which helps to restore vitality and luster to your locks.

4 days before your wedding – get a brazilian and eyebrow wax! This is the perfect time to schedule in a wax – getting rid of those nasty unwanted hairs… Not a fun job, but is so important if you don’t want to have fuzzies in awkward places. Make sure your esthetician gets any stray hairs that you may not see in nooks and crannies… Sometimes you’ll find a random chin hair or a sporadic neck hair that you didn’t even know about! Get it taken care of at least 4 days before your wedding to avoid any redness or irritation that may happen.

Take your vitamins – calm your nerves and boost your immune system with Vitamins B and C, both are good to slow down the look of aging and are important antioxidants that fight off illness.

3 days before your wedding – get a St. Tropez Tan or a Spray tan. Book an appointment to receive a sunless tan treatment with a professional. It’s the healthiest and safest way to get that golden glow!

If you must tan outside, make sure you adjust your bikini top into the same style as your wedding dress – or go topless in your backyard! Shhhh, we won’t tell anybody!

Book a couple’s massage with your fiance to get your muscles relaxed and to relieve any tension that this wedding planning may have caused you! Plus, it will be relaxing and romantic!

2 days before your wedding – get a manicure and pedicure. If you’re choosing a regular polish, you will have enough time to dry and will not encounter and chipping. Another popular choice is getting a gel polish manicure and pedicure, which lasts for 2 – 4 weeks without chipping, cracking or smudging with instant dryness. Add on for only $25 at The Studio by MikaDoesMakeup! Get your girlfriends together for a spa party either at your house or the salon with food and drinks, for a nice chance to spend time with your wedding party before the big day.

Prepare a bath for yourself with calming bath bombs or bath beads which contain ingredients that have stress reducing and anti-inflammatory properties. Get to bed early and don’t forget to set your alarm!

1 day before your wedding – make sure to start the day with a healthy and light breakfast. There is nothing worse than feeling faint halfway through the day because you’re running on empty.

Allow enough time for your beauty prep – hair and makeup, getting into your dress… Usually you will need about 3 hours, so get your beauty sleep the night before!

It’s your Wedding Day – have the time of your life and make sure to breathe and enjoy every minute!

Dont’s -

Don’t cut or colour your hair so close to your wedding day!

Don’t do a chemical peel, laser treatments or injections!

Don’t get waxed the night before!

10 (un)Sexy Things About Cocaine

Categories: drugs, entertainment, makeup, model, photography, vancouverTags: , , , , , Author:

Hush Magazine is a Vancouver based online magazine that is known for their risque and tongue in cheek articles that can grab anyone’s attention. Myself and Jewlee from The Studio Beauty Team were asked to do the makeup and hair for their jaw dropping article – 10 (un)Sexy Things About Cocaine… I did the makeup and Jewlee did the hair for models Ludi and Emily, who had to be transformed into 2 crazed coke fiends on a binge night out… It was such a fun assignment for us! In this photoshoot we got to make our models look disheveled and run-down, which is such a difference for us because we are so used to making people look perfect and put together.

The entire article was to be shot in black and white, so I made sure to apply a lot more makeup then usual, with some major contouring and highlighting. I even added darker eyeshadows, messy liner, lashes, and a deep lipstick to add to her messy look. Jewlee curled and teased Emily’s hair like crazy and piled it on top of her head into a mile high faux-hawk. Ludi did not need much touching up but I contoured his face and added some rock n’ roll “guy-liner” to make him look a little more rough around the edges…

Check out the photos from the Hush Magazine article!

Mineral Primer from YoungBlood Mineral Cosmetics

Categories: bride, health & beauty, makeup, skin, spa, vancouver, weddingTags: , , , , , Author:

When doing makeup on myself or my clients, I always start with a good mineral primer to perfect the skin and have it ready for the rest of the makeup. After trying many different primers, I have come to love and favour YoungBlood’s Mineral Primer over the rest… because it’s actually good for your skin… and it’s conveniently packed with minerals and vitamins to protect skin from environmental damage.

This mineral primer is colourless and helps enhance the performance of your makeup throughout the day… It’s also lightweight, and the silky formula smoothes the appearance of any fine lines and pores, creating an even surface for your foundation.

You can pick up your own YoungBlood Mineral Primer from The Studio by MikaDoesMakeup – located at 1054 Hornby Street in downtown Vancouver.
